As a final post before your O Level MCQ paper, I will be discussing a question on Electrolysis and Simple Cells. Consider the question as follows:-
The correct answer is C.
To solve this question, we first consider the set up on the right.
With Zinc as Y and Copper as Z –>
Zinc, being more reactive will lose electrons more readily. This causes it to act like a simple cell/battery.
Now, consider the set up on the left.
With both electrodes as copper, and with the simple cell on the right acting as a battery, X gains electrons and becomes the cathode. Copper ions are attracted to the cathode and discharged as copper metal!
This is a fairly interesting question as it ?combines both simple cells and electrolysis into 1! I hope you found this useful. All the best for tomorrow!
