With the O Level exams around the corner, some students have voiced out that there’s just too much content to memorise and digest. (Should have started earlier shouldn’t you?)

Anyway, here’s a quick way to tell if a certain substance (element or compound) is oxidised or reduced! It should be pretty simple to understand.

Basically, if the…
1. oxidation state of a substance increases, or
2. if it loses hydrogen, or
3. if it gains oxygen, or
4. if it is loses electrons, it is oxidised.

If the…
1. oxidation state decreases, or
2. if it gains hydrogen, or
3. if it loses oxygen, or
4. if it gains electrons, it is reduced.
